Palette Play: Lift Your Interiors with the Colors of Fall

Autumn is magical as it is complex. It’s a season, a color, a smell, an emotion. Even if we don’t experience fall in the Philippines, we all know the soothing feeling of a snug and cozy room sheltered from the gloomy outdoors. Thick blankets, sweaters, and cups of hot cocoa – we love all that Autumn encapsulates, especially when it’s wet season.

So how do we replicate that Autumn coziness at home, especially as the rainy season and Ber months are upon us?

It’s time to take it brown a notch. The Autumn palette – one of many interior design approaches – is an easy and powerful way to lift the warmth and comfort of your home. Reds, yellows, purples, blacks, blues, oranges, magentas, and browns – check them out, the feelings and memories they evoke, and decide what to mix and match for that perfect autumn interior.

Red – a bright, warm color that evokes strong emotions; associated with love, warmth, and comfort; also considered an intense, or even angry color that creates feelings of excitement or intensity; energetic and exciting, powerful, can be fun, passionate and bold.

The color of passion, blood, fire, and sensitivity.

Yellow – a bright color that is often described as cheery and warm; striking and attention-grabbing; can also create feelings of frustration and anger; energetic; used in a small amount to draw notice; cheerful, complex, energetic, aggressive.

The color of lemons, mustard, freshness, and positivity.

Purple – mysterious, spiritual, and imaginative; occurs rarely in nature, so it is viewed as rare and intriguing; while violet occurs naturally in the visible spectrum, purple is actually a combination of blue and red; royal, exotic, a great deal of symbolism, unique visual characteristics, regal, sensual, conveys wisdom, is soothing and mysterious.

The color of grapes, roots, power, and creativity.

Black – popular as an indicator of power; associated with formality, sophistication, and sexuality; in ancient Egypt, represented life and rebirth; often used in fashion because of its slimming quality.

The color of night, panthers, strength, and elegance.

Blue – a favorite of many people and the color most preferred by men; often viewed as a non-threatening color that can seem conservative and traditional; calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity; often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly.

The color of blueberries, denim, stability, and reliability.

Orange – an energetic color;  feelings of excitement, enthusiasm, and warmth; used to draw attention; energetic; also the color of bright sunsets and citrus fruits; also linked to autumn and the color of leaves and pumpkins; attention-grabbing, energetic.

The color of oranges, tangerines, spirituality, and happiness.

Magenta – a universal harmony and love; emotional balance; helps our spirit soar, spiritual yet practical; encourages common sense; loving, compassionate, supportive and kind; imaginative, innovative, creative and artistic, non-conformist.

The color of Fuchsia, flamingoes, imagination and harmony.

Brown – a natural color that evokes a sense of strength and reliability; often seen as solid, much like the earth; often associated with dependability and safety; brings to mind feelings of comfort and security; often described as natural, down-to-earth, and conventional, but brown can also be sophisticated.

The color of the earth, bread, warmth and resilience.

The Autumn palette’s appeal is its cumulative harmony – the beautiful balance between warm and cold, energy and calm, passion and passivity. Use them wisely, let them complement each other, like a rich blanket of fallen leaves.

Cozy. Calm. Artistic. Bold. Mysterious. Passionate. Sincere. Cheerful. Give your home a new persona and invigorate it with the colors of Autumn.
