Screen-free Weekends with the Kids

Ah, the weekend. The perfect time to sleep in, catch up on some reading, and spend time with the kids. To read stories, teach them life skills, help them with their hobbies, and be there when they tell you about their amazing week. That is, until you get sucked into the endless vortex of social media.

Before you know it, you’ve spent two days watching cat videos and it’s time to send the kids back to school again.

The value of unplugging

It’s time to disconnect from the digital space. Not just so you can reclaim time and protect your mental health but for your kid’s sake too. Recent studies show that children adapt smartphone habits from their parents, and just like the age-old mantra goes, parents need to walk the talk for their children to follow.

The best way to go about this is to find activities both you and the kids will enjoy. Stuff you can do together without having to check your notifications every 5 seconds.

Take them down memory lane

Kids today hardly know what it’s like growing up without tablets and apps. So, why not dust off that old Game of the Generals set and have a Pinoy board game night? Introduce them to the classics, like pogs and teks, sungka, pick-up sticks, and jackstones. Or try something new altogether by grabbing a modern Filipino board game that even adults will want in on the fun.

Whip up something delicious

Baking is a great way to introduce kids to the wonders of cooking! From mini cupcakes to brownie bites, there are a lot of easy-bake recipes online, but making marshmallows tops our list of sweet treats. Kids just love ‘em. They’re fluffy, sticky, and the excitement they put on your kid’s faces as you toast them bonfire-style is priceless.

Bring out the pillow fort

The living room is often a wasteland by day’s end. So run with it. Lay out the comforters, fluff the pillows, and maybe throw up a bed sheet like a tent. There, the perfect hideaway for your kids. Meanwhile, you’ve got the couch to yourself. No more shielding wine glasses from bouncing toddlers.

Choose your moments

It’s tempting to document every moment with your phone camera but it’s also important to just enjoy your kids. So take a breather from the fast-paced life. Get your hands on some great games and carve out that special family time. Because one day your children will be grown up and doing their own thing. Which sounds like the perfect time to catch up on funny cat vids.
